"Tonomachi" Wellbeing Research Campus – Where new industries are being created through innovations with world-class social systems and technologies

Adopted as a feasibility study project in FY2015, and officially adopted in FY2016
(Project period: December 2015 to March 2020)

The "Tonomachi Wellbeing Research Campus" for creating new industries through innovations with world-class social systems and technologies was proposed by Keio　University, Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech), and others for the “World-Class Research Complex Promotion Program,” a new project for FY2015 fiscal year by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). It was adopted as FS (feasibility study) project in November of 2015 and was officially adopted in September of 2016.

A research complex is a base for promoting multiple innovations where research institutes, companies, universities and others gather in one area to fuse their activities for integrated and comprehensive development of cutting-edge R&D, commercialization of achievements, and fostering human resource through the integration of different fields to attract the world's attention. At the same time, seeds that emerge from this base are grown into new business ideas along with the construction of systems for quick industrialization and fostering entrepreneurs, and effort will be made to become an international base to “realize a more attractive way of life (Wellbeing).”

Among the four cores, world-leading technological areas at the Tonomachi Research Complex, Tokyo Tech is in charge of "Molecular Design & Nanofabrication" and is working on developing molecular design technologies that combine supercomputing with actual experiments. Using Tokyo Tech’s TSUBAME 3.0 supercomputer, we are developing a screening system for improved functional polymers, which combines the functional polymer screening system of the Innovation Center of NanoMedicine (iCONM) with in silico molecular design technology. We are also developing molecular design technologies for drug candidates in cooperation with participating companies. As part of our activities to develop human resources, we are holding seminars on IT drug discovery and data science in the Tonomachi area.
